The bridge to Brooklyn

So in case you didn't know, this coming weekend is Comfest, the smorgasbord of music, art, and social do-goodery that takes over Goodale Park each year for three days in June. And as irresistable as drinking beer all day, eating fried food items and getting one's breasts painted might be, one of the main things that the Fest has going for it is that it provides an excuse for spending an entire weekend just catching up with old friends.

Indeed, it's not unusual for those who have transplanted to locations outside of I-270 to flock home just to do so. They certainly don't come back for the drum circles, right?

But these days here in Brooklyn making the 10-hour drive hardly seems necessary. I mean, fuggedaboutit! There is such a large number of Columbus musicians living in the borough that it would probably be possible to stage a mini Community Festival right here in Kings County.

And if you take into account the other ex-pats once involved in the Columbus music scene in ways other than making music (putting out records, running websites, booking shows, etc.) or onetime musicians now pursuing other endeavors, the number of Brooklyn-based Columbusites doubles. Hell, I can hardly walk down the street without someone shouting, "O-H!"

No, thank God, that never happens. But you get my drift.

There are a lot of us in New York, and we all live in Brooklyn. This is, of course, because the days of living on the cheap in Manhattan's Lower East Side are over. Brooklyn has lower rents and (generally) bigger spaces, both important quantities to the struggling musician. And now the borough has just as many venues as Manhattan-more if you consider the seemingly endless number of DIY spaces sprouting up in Williamsburg and Bushwick.

"I think it is hard to be a musician, no matter where you live," J.P. Olsen tells me. "But it comes down to this: in Columbus you have more time and more space, but fewer venues. In Brooklyn, you have tons of venues, but the time and space constraints are more extreme."

In Columbus, Olsen fronted the Beetkeepers, who released one album in 1988, and moved to Brooklyn in 1990 to take a job as a book editor. He lived all over the city in apartments of varying quality before settling down in Park Slope's south end.

When he arrived in New York, though, the local music scene was pretty dismal; so much so that he eventually turned to Columbus' Haynes Boys to form Burn Barrel with him in 1999. But these days, with the landscape having vastly improved, Olsen has a new project, the Malefactors of Great Wealth, in which he's collaborated with the Madison Square Gardeners. Olsen and the MSGs will return to Columbus to play Comfest Sunday, joining Tim Easton, another transplanted Central Ohioan who now calls Joshua Tree, Calif. home.

Pharmacty Error: Family Claims Wrong Prescription Caused Death of ...

From May 2009 until his death roughly a year later, Galette attended Queens Children's Psychiatric Center in Bellerose for depression, mood swings, and aggressive behavior. His doctor, Marie Gisele St. Felix, wrote Galette two prescriptions for Bupropion, an anti-depressant drug. The prescriptions were filled at a Walgreens without question or concern. Pastor followed the dosage instructions on the bottles, causing Galette to overdose. He was rushed to Jamaica Hospital, but passed away before arrival. Why do I tell you about this tragic death case? To illustrate the type of case that handle on a regular basis. Pharmacy errors are still prevalent today despite the fact that many doctors are using electronic medical records. Prescriptions are still written by hand. You are the typical types of mistakes I see involving pharmacies and pharmaceutical errors: Gerry practices law exclusively in the State of New York.
