'Simple Folk' Friends Hit Lottery Jackpot

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Two friends from Anderson needed some time to absorb the fact that their Mega Millions ticket was a winner.

The pair, who did not want their names released, has been playing the South Carolina Education Lottery together for years, with no luck. That all changed when the ticket they bought for the June 7 game hit all five white ball numbers: 29 - 32 - 35 - 47 - 52. Even though they didn't have the Mega Ball number, 13, the ticket was worth $250,000. Since they paid the extra $1 for the Megaplier, the two men were able to haul in a whopping $1 million, according to lottery officials. The prize for matching five white balls with Megaplier is an automatic $1 million, regardless of the multiplier selected.

The men bought their ticket at MD Food Mart in Anderson. The store won $10,000, as a 1 percent retailer commission.

"We're simple folk," said one of the men, as they redeemed their winning ticket at the lottery office in Columbia. They both vowed not to let the win change them. "I'm happy to have it," admitted the other.

One of the men admitted to lottery officials that he was so nervous, he didn't want to hang on to the ticket. "I was scared something was going to happen to it or if I kept it too long the numbers might fade." So, his buddy held onto the ticket for two weeks.

"We were letting it soak in," said the keeper of the ticket. "We wanted to wait for the right day."

That day was Wednesday.

"We want to look further than today," said one of the men awaiting the check. "We want to help many generations of our families with this blessing," he said

The estimated Mega Millions jackpot for Friday's drawing is $76 million.
