Like any good hot rod, the Nighthawk S was a purposeful, aggressive look. The painting was either two-tone black and blue or black and red, and just about everything else on the bike - except for piles of fake chrome speed of carbohydrates on the outside and polished the edges of the fins in the head - was matched in elegant, menacing black. Stylistically, the panels of the tank, seat and side imitated the angle of the fins polished engine, and combined with the fairing of the bike Fab little bikini, 700 added to a package that shouted "go fast" for riders looking to two channels of entertainment.

Turning this visual feast was air-cooled, inline four-cylinder. While visually similar to the engine introduced last year in the CB650, the 700 was brand new. Designed as a 750 (Canada and Europe received a version 750), for the U.S. market was the engine-3.6mm stroked to give a displacement of 696cc, leaving the S Nighthawk just squeak under a newly enacted rate of imported bikes 700cc and above.

Since he retained his 750cc bore for he could still breathe as a 750 through its 4-valve head, giving the new bike 67hp to the rear wheel and performance along with and even exceeding 750s of others. Recorded Cycle Guide quarter mile time of 12.048 seconds, putting the S Nighthawk ahead of Kawasaki GPz750 (12.167 seconds) and only slightly behind Suzuki GS750E (11.893 seconds). It was only a fraction slower than Honda liquid cooled V4 Sport, the Interceptor VF750F (11.963 seconds).
