Teachers work to close learning gaps with refugee child
ABOUT THIS SERIES The Democrat and Chronicle spent the 2010-2011 school year following the progress of one refugee student at The Children's School of Rochester. During hours of classroom visits and interviews throughout the year, a reporter and photographer documented his year of learning.
SUNDAY For one refugee student, starting at school brings plenty of challenges.
TODAY Teachers look for ways to help Jackson succeed in the classroom.
TUESDAY School puts emphasis on community, family involvement.
The team works diligently to secure any resources they can to help Jackson make progress. Because of his vision problems, Jackson qualifies for special education services, which include an aide to work with him individually in the classroom and a battery of other specialists who work with him outside the classroom. The aide, Brian Burger, devotes his days to helping Jackson master his days of the week, alphabet and double-digit numbers, along the way forging a close bond with the student. "Good morning Mr. Burger how are you I'm fine," he greets his aide the first day back to school, stringing all of the phrases together in one sentence. His teachers give him homework for the first time, a basic assignment to practice tracing the letters of the alphabet. He returns with it the next day all filled out, beaming as he turns it into his teacher. Yet the second half of the year also brings a looming reality standardized testing.

Very helpful reviews 9 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Great complementary tool! As a customer I like the format of this book! There is a word problem for each day of the week - Monday to Thursday is half-sheets, and Friday is a full sheet. I use this book for my morning job / opening - I have difficulties every day waiting for the students at their desks, and that's the first thing in the morning. It's a fantastic review and the use of basic skills, particularly because our mathematics curriculum has strayed away from using one of the grounds this year. I think it is a great addition! PS I also have the Daily Paragraph Editing, and it serves a similar function to our writing curriculum! * U * 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Excellent for daily review and practice! By AKF I am a 2/3th grade teacher and love this whole series. I use daily word problems as part of the brain-warming "period of days. This is when I give an example of different things (the word problem practice daily language daily) to work in silence while all installed and I can see the tasks, the lunch bill, etc. I think this is a great tool that allows students to work in one of the problems of the day, so not overwhelming, and are able to evaluate a variety of skills. I think "hot brain" shelf-life problems using a mixture of words per day, the practice of mathematics every day, make everyday language, and the daily edition of the point, so you can review a mix of skills learned and that must be learned for the NJ ASK, the mix and not overwhelming students with too many problems early in the morning. excellent resource, I recommend to all third grade teacher and even parents to raise the word of your child problem math skills! Shields, usually taught in Title I schools, which may be part of it, but this series is a challenge I have used the third and fifth grades, and the kids I teach usually can not start in this book up to half of the year. In addition, all problems are quite complicated, so do not focus on a particular skill. For example, if the problem is the means test may be of a style icon with information released to distract the students. I think it is good that the problems are so filled with learning moments, but too bad you can take time to do just a problem in one day if the problems are too difficult. See all 5 reviews ...
