A few dog Q's, yards, Basenji's, foods ... - Low Residue Dog Food

1.) basenji’s. anyone own one? what are the pros and cons about the breed… are they hard to take care of?

2.) yards. how do you train your dog to stay in your yard without a fence (are basenji’s easy to train like this?)

3.) is it ok to feed a dog, like, Sprout dog food, is it cheap and good enough quality?

4.) would opening a dog rescue be practical? our area is desparate to find a shelter. would it be to expensive to do alone?

Sorry for so many questions, but they all came up at once! i have a golden, and he isn’t really good at staying in the yard… (he likes to chase bunnies) am i hopeless? thanks so much.

most dogs will chase bunnies or squirrels or cats they don’t know though it’s true that some breeds have a higher prey drive. It’s also true that some dogs tend to want to jump fences and roam more. But according to your question about training a dog to stay in a yard without a fence, I know dogs can be trained to "stay" while you are sitting there with them, despite distractions, but I haven’t heard of any dog, any breed unless it’s dead and stuffed, that will stay in a yard that isn’t fenced if left outside for any length of time, especially if distracted, not to mention the risks of someone coming into your unfenced yard and harming or taking your dog. If you are talking rescue shelter, I’d suggest contacting some in your area (state) and gathering info from them on how they got started and got their legal recognition so you could do the same and legally start fund raising to support your goal. Or you might find out that it is not for you, at the level of opening a shelter. GL with your endeavors!

I’ll only address the "staying in yard without a fence" question, but it’s the only one I can really answer. But…you are expecting a dog to go against all instinct. There are too many things to distract your dog to, realistically, expect them to stay in a certain area without a fence. No matter how well trained the dog is, there is something that can spark their interest and they are gone. It’s dangerous. And, not only to your dog going out and getting run over, but there is also no protection for your dog from strays or other predators.

Please- use a fence or supervise with a leash.
