Dogs And Ticks

Maple Grove Patch Pets

Tick, tick, tick...

This is what we keep hearing in our office as the summer heats up and the tick season approaches. Maple Grove is known for its open and undeveloped spaces. As beautiful as these rural and natural areas are, these regions are home to wildlife and the parasites that feed on them. During this time of year, the most annoying of these parasites is the tick. Tick season peaks in May, June and July, quiets a little in the heat of the summer, and returns in the fall.

Ticks transmit a variety of diseases including Babesia, Bartonella, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and most commonly in this area Ehrlichia/Anaplasmosis and Lyme disease. The latter is most commonly transmitted by the deer tick, but all tick species have been found to carry disease. The most common symptom of all the tick borne diseases is a high fever between 103 to 105 degrees. Anemia, lethargy and generalized weakness may also occur. Lyme disease is known to affect the joints and generalized pain and a pattern of shifting leg lameness are often also present. Symptoms of Lyme disease may not appear for two to six months post infection.

Ticks do not travel long distances on their own, but wait in wooded areas and tall grass for deer, dogs, people and other animals to unknowingly cross their path. When given the opportunity, the ticks grab on and catch a ride. The best way to avoid tick borne diseases is to prevent ticks in the first place. While collars, powders, dips, and rinses have been around for a while, most veterinarians currently recommend sprays or monthly topical applications. These contain either fipronil, permethrin, or pyrethrin. Permethrin-based solutions can be fatal to cats so these products must be used carefully. In addition, it is important to check dogs around the head, neck, and chest for ticks routinely and especially after outdoor activity.

If you do find a tick on your dog, remove it promptly and carefully. The best way to remove a tick from a dog is to slowly separate the tick from the pet. To remove a tick, loosen its legs from the pet and then hold it at the neck area with a fine tweezers. Pull with steady pressure to assure that all of the tick is removed. Avoid squeezing the body of the tick and do not try to get the tick to “back out” with a match. Dispose of the tick in an outside garbage or flush it down the toilet. Be sure to wash your hands to prevent human exposure to possible tick borne diseases. If the area where the tick was attached is irritated, a triple antibiotic or corticosteroid cream may make soothe the irritation.

Herbal Tick Repellent for Dogs and Humans « National Lacy Dog ...

This is the time of year when dog owners start asking lots of questions about flea and tick control.

Having lived in the Midwest for awhile with two active lacy dogs I can attest that ticks are an epidemic up here. Every morning after we’ve been outside, I pick all of the ticks I see off the dogs. After our evening walk I, once again, thoroughly pick ticks off the dogs and then the couch and no matter how many I get there is always at least one more.

Spot treatments, sprays, baths…I know these products are toxic and they don’t seem to reduce the amount of ticks I see every day. Spot treatments like Frontline claim to kill ticks that crawl on your dog within 12-24 hours. But by the time the pesticides have done their job, the tick has already had a chance to bite and begin feeding on your dog. So while it seems these products prevent ticks from falling off and reproducing in the house or kennel but they don’t do much to prevent the transfer of dick borne diseases. Ticks are undeniably the scourge of the Earth!

I’ve concluded that the first and best line of defense is simply to keep them away all together. As far as repellents for dogs, natural methods include external application of food grade-diatomaceous earth and powdered sulfur. DE works mechanically by scratching away the insect’s exoskeleton but it is reportedly more useful as a yard or kennel treatment since it isn’t necessarily fast acting and the sulfur method has a really unpleasant scent to humans.

I read where Consumer Reports recently tested insect repellents for humans and in their test, two Deet-free products worked as well as Deet-based products.

And the top 5 were:

Off Deep Woods Sportsmen II Repel Plant Based Lemon Eucalyptus

The Repel product is simply Lemon Eucalyptus oil which, though it has a slightly greasy feel, smells delightfully like citronella. After a little research I found that, for years, people have been using lemon eucalyptus essential oil mixed with olive oil or some other inert base as mosquito and tick repellent. I sprayed some of the Repel brand on the dogs and, after a romp in the grassy field behind the house, I searched and found….no ticks! Surly it can’t work that well! There’s always at least one tick!

The only problem I have encountered with the spray is the dogs apparently hate the smell and will try like mad to rub it off, often rubbing it right into the carpet or couch cushions. At least it seems the oil-based product is sticky enough to stay on their coat. Our experiment with lemon eucalyptus will continue.
