Light For Seasonal Depression

Music a sure-fire cure for seasonal blues

Musician Sam King won't let low temperatures stop him hitting the high notes this winter.

This will be King's third year of organising the Seasonal Affective Disorder Sessions, a series of local shows aimed at coaxing Canberrans out of their homes during the colder months.''Certainly it gets tough in winter because everyone just wants to hibernate,'' he said.

''The shows are mostly so people can have both somewhere to play and to see gigs in winter. It was a good excuse to get people out.''

The shows get their name from a form of depression called seasonal affective disorder, which is related to the change in season.

Vivienne Lewis, of the University of Canberra, said the illness was usually triggered by a lack of light and colder temperatures. ''Most people experience symptoms like being low in mood, difficulty motivating and sometimes they stop engaging in family activities,'' she said. ''As the season changes, their mood tends to lift.''

People who already have a genetic susceptibility to depression are more likely to suffer from the disorder, but Dr Lewis said it could occur in people moving to colder climates.

''You can sometimes see it in people who have come from living somewhere warm and sunny and then moved somewhere colder,'' she said.''Sometimes the change in environment can trigger it. People in Canberra are often less susceptible because Canberra is often quite sunny.''

But the ACT Health's Division of General Practice president, Rashmi Sharma, said previous winters had coincided with an increase in reported depression symptoms in Canberra. ''Anecdotal reporting suggests that GPs and psychologists do treat seasonal affective disorder sufferers over the winter months as higher numbers of patients present symptoms following a period of overcast days,'' she said.

Dr Sharma said it was important for people experiencing symptoms of seasonal affective disorder to be exposed to sunlight and engage in social activities.

Light therapy or phototherapy consists of exposure to daylight or to specific wavelengths of light using lasers, light-emitting diodes, fluorescent lamps, dichroic lamps or very bright, full-spectrum light, for a prescribed amount of time and, in some cases, at a specific time of day. Light therapy directed at the skin is used to treat Acne vulgaris and neonatal jaundice. Light therapy which strikes the retina of the eyes is used to treat circadian rhythm disorders such as delayed sleep phase syndrome. Bright light to the eyes treats seasonal affective disorder, with some support for its use also with non-seasonal psychiatric disorders.
