Your morning jolt: This transcript of immigration law hearing is required reading

On your behalf, we have obtained the transcript of Monday’s hearing in federal court on the request by the Georgia Latino Alliance for Human Rights to block enforcement of Georgia’s new illegal immigration bill.

It is a fascinating read, and can be found in its entirety by clicking here.

But here are a few juicy exchanges between U.S. District Court Judge Thomas Thrash and Devon Orland, representing the state attorney general’s office:

Thrash: Well, let me ask you, Ms. Orland, what do you and the General Assembly say is the purpose of this statute? I mean, is the purpose to drive all undocumented non-citizens, illegal aliens, call them what you will, out of Georgia? Is that the purpose of the statute?

Orland: The purpose – the public interest in the statute, I think, is actually more clear than that. It’s to save the resources of the state of Georgia in medical care, imprisonment. It’s what we submitted as evidence for the response to the preliminary injunction. A specific legislator may have had different reasons for passing the statute, but that is not evidence of legislative intent in this state, so….

Thrash: So why make it so complicated? Why not just say, okay, it’s illegal in the state of Georgia to be an illegal alien and we are going to send you to prison for five years if you’re not legally in the United States and you’re in the state of Georgia. Why make it so complicated?

Orland: Well, I think to some degree, your honor – it’s an interesting point – but to some degree I think to cut the head off the snake. It’s no different than trying to get the head distributor of drugs or guns rather than going after the people purchasing the drugs. Here we are going after, quite frankly, the people that are bringing people into this state unlawfully, are transporting, are making it easy for them to be here…..

Thrash: ….I mean, you may have one county that says, okay, we don’t like all these Hispanic children in our schools so we are going to make it really tough on anybody that we suspect could be in this country illegally, and we are going to arrest them and detain them until they leave our county – except they can come here for two months to pick our Vidalia onions, and we are not going to bother them then.

And then we like the people down at the Mexican restaurant, like the food there, so we are not going to bother the cook. And we are not going to bother the guy that does the mayor’s yard work. They’re a nice family, and we are going to leave them alone. But we are going to make life so difficult for everybody else that they are going to leave – except the ones we need to pick our crops or do yard work or wash the dishes in the restaurant.
