High schools: Southern realignment raises questions for Northern teams

NIAA realignment

» The NIAA unanimously approved Wednesday a measure that will allow Southern Nevada to split the state's highest classification into two divisions -- a 4A Division I and 4A Division II -- and dissolve the 3A.
» Northern Nevada now must follow suit or create an acceptable alternative in determining how it will compete for state championships with the realigned southern divisions.

Las Vegas teacher inspires at-risk students by sharing own experiences

At-risk students at Chaparral High School in Las Vegas, Nevada, have been inspired by Deborah LaPlante, a teacher who has encouraged them to succeed by sharing stories of her own experiences as a high-school dropout, reports the Las Vegas Sun.

LaPlante left high school at the age of 16 when she fled an abusive home in Escondido, California. After moving around for a few months, she went to Michigan, where she earned her GED and married her high school sweetheart.

She then spent several years living on army bases around the world with her husband, but she eventually earned a bachelor's degree in Asian studies and a master's in education. She now teaches Japanese and hopes that her story inspires others to complete their high school education.

"I thought I might as well drop out because they told me I’m not graduating on time," Natalie Vasquez, a student at Chaparral, told the news source. "But Mrs. LaPlante told me her story and that made me believe that I could graduate…She’s the reason why I’m graduating. She made me realize there’s a better life out there and that a negative attitude isn’t good."

According to its website, Chaparral High School had an enrollment of 421 students, more than a third of whom have limited English proficiency. Its dropout rate is 7 percent, higher than the district average of 4.5 percent.
