F or organizers of the 18th annual Harrisonburg-Rockingham African-American Festival, the event is more than just an event for the family. It is an effort to bring the community together.

Zenaida Hall, media and marketing coordinator with Harrisonburg tourism and visitor services, said the festival began as a grass-roots effort to bring attention to and celebrate the heritage, achievements and contributions of Harrisonburg's and Rockingham's African-American communities, and create unity, promote family and celebrate heritage and diversity through expressions of faith and love.

The festival began in 1992 by a group of citizens from Harrisonburg and Rockingham who were concerned about the lack of history and positive acknowledgment of African-Americans' contributions to the area.

The first festival was held in front of the Lucy Simms School building, where people from all over the region attended, ethnic foods and crafts were sold, displays were set up showcasing the communities' histories and several gospel choirs performed from local churches.

Lynn Turner, special events coordinator for the city of Harrisonburg, who is also a sponsor for the event, said she has been working with the event for the past three years.

"There will be entertainment all day, including reggae, gospel, blues, hip-hop and rap music, activities for children of all ages, food and craft vendors, a hair show and so much more, " Turner said.

"The food is really excellent, and a lot of people in the community come out just to eat all of the wonderful foods," Turner said, adding that there will be fried fish and chicken, ribs, ethnic foods provided by Blue Nile Ethiopian Cuisine, ice cream and more.

She said each year the festival takes tremendous hands-on approach from the community and extended support from organizations that have given time, resources and money.

"Our goal is to just bring the community together and show unity," Turner said. "It makes for a really nice day."

Monica Robinson, chair of the event and committee member for over 12 years, said the festival began as a two-day community event. "The first day was more of a day of games and carnivals, and the second day we had a variety of entertainment, including African dancers, drummers, railroad songs depicting what life was like on the railroad, acoustic music, poetry and cultural events and children's activities," she said.

Robinson said that this year, they are also focusing incorporating more educational components for the youth.

I am in the same boat and my employer has decided that they will revoke I-140 no matter what. Can you tell me how did you find out that your employer revoked your I-140. Maybe he/they did not. But my firm is really big and they go by the rules. So I just want to know whenever employer sends the revocation, does USCIS always revoke or it is upto their discretion whether or not to revoke. Problem is I do not have a job yet so I cannot even file for AC21. From what I have researched over the internet, employer can withdraw anytime. USCIS may work on it anytime, maybe in a month or 6 months or probably when they adjujicate/preadjujicate your case. It depends on the VO working on your case to give an RFE or a NOID or a denial. It has happened in recent times, check out some threads on and immigration.com. I don't believe that there are races who are brighter or better than others. It's more of a culture and upbringing that makes the difference. Imagine those Spelling bee winners, who are now accustomed to US way of living. When they grow up, got their own family, will they instill the same values as their parents did or will they be like American Dad/Mom, who let their children pursue whatever they want? You will not have any problems since you already submitted AC21 documents (keep certified mail receipt with you).....so whatever your attorney said, it is correct....you don't need to worry.....even your employer withdraws your I-140 it won't be having any problem.....it happened in my case....I have sent AC21 docs....after that employer withdraws I-140.....but nothing happened to I-140 How did you find your file was not updated AC21 docs..... better way is go to local USCIS and asked your attorney name whether it is the changed one or previous one if you have changed them.....call I800 and asked them few details like attorney name and company name etc..... see some times they won't reveal any info....you have to find out the way to get right answer (like tell them old attorney's name and say didn't get any updated information about your case etc)....
