Craft Kits: Everyone loves 'em
Retailers love craft kits and so do parents and kids — although maybe not for the same reasons. Craft kits are an evergreen and important segment of the toy industry’s hot arts and crafts category, producing significant year-round sales for retailers — independents to discount chains. And this year, with the major “DIY and hand-made” trend still steaming along in the grown-up consumer market, it’s not surprising to see similar interests echoed in the pint-size world. Retailers can expect to see craft kits, especially those that produce a personalized, custom-made creation suitable for a child’s own use or for gift-giving, more popular than ever. said they appreciated the wide selection of projects, subjects and titles that let them tailor the purchase to their child’s interests and skill levels. Plus, the range of sizes and price points allowed them to buy for many purposes — minis for everyday fun to higher-end birthday gifts. They also noted the number of learning benefits associated with craft kits, including the stimulation of creativity and imagination, the development of fine motor skills, along with a sense of accomplishment that comes from completing a project (especially if it’s a useable product). Parents also said sharing a crafting project with their child was a great bonding and communication opportunity.
Of course, at this time of the year with school’s end and summer vacation-time looming, moms are already thinking ahead about ways to keep kids busy and entertained — rain or shine. When bad weather nixes the wading pool and water wings, craft kits can keep the fun going indoors. Just how much of a rainy-day saviour craft kits can be was illustrated at the Canadian Toy Association’s (CTA) Hot Toys for Summer 2011 event, held recently in downtown Toronto on a Lake Ontario beach. About 30 youngsters were on hand to demonstrate product — water blasters to card games — for visiting media. And while many started out with the active-play splash toys, the cold, windy and showery day soon had most of the kids clustered around the activity tables in the relative shelter of a big tent. Luckily several of the CTA’s member companies had the foresight to supply the event with craft kits that soon had kids of all ages happy and engaged.
