You don't have to hop on a plane to get away from the concrete jungle. Beaches, mountains and quaint towns are only a short drive away or, better yet, accessible by public transporation.

Located in New Jersey's Gateway National Recreation Area, Sandy Hook is ideal for taking in the sights and sounds of nature. The picturesque seven-mile stretch of beach is home to sand dunes, salt and freshwater marshes and miles of hiking and biking trails - all just a 30-minute ferry ride from Manhattan on the SeaStreak ( www.seastreak.com ), which departs daily.
A multi-use path starts at the entrance and loops down to Fort Hancock, a defunct Army post that's home to the Sandy Hook Lighthouse, open daily between 1 and 4:30 p.m. Climb to the top for an aerial view of the beach (and on a clear day, the Big Apple skyline) or step into the keeper's quarters next door for historical exhibits on New Jersey's many lighthouses.
If you're on the lookout for birds, stop by the Sandy Hook Bird Observatory. More than 350 species of birds and 50 species of butterflies flock to the region every year. Expert naturalists from the New Jersey Audubon Society (www.njaudubon.org) lead tours for a small fee throughout the summer, including guided walks and birding workshops.
