How much do you really want to know about your mother's sexual history? In Michael Mitnick's Sex Lives of Our Parents , presented by Second Stage Theatre Uptown at the McGinn/Cazale Theatre, protagonist Virginia (played by Virginia Kull) learns more than she ever wanted to. The briskly paced 90-minute comedy is provocative and engaging, even if director Davis McCallum's production is unevenly executed.In the play, Virginia has returned to her childhood home as she and fiancé Jeff (Ben Rappaport) prepare for their upcoming wedding. It's not completely clear why the couple is staying with Virginia's parents, Charlotte (Lisa Emery) and Christopher (Daniel Jenkins), as they both seem to be commuting from there to a nearby city where Virginia works at a gallery with Jeff's best friend, Elliot (Teddy Bergman).
It's in her parents' house, though, where Virginia starts having dreams and then waking visions in which she witnesses key moments in Charlotte's life, accompanied by some surprising revelations.
Emery tends to overplay the child-like mannerisms she employs in the flashback sequences -- particularly in a scene set during Charlotte's teenage years, involving a Polaroid camera and a boy named Rodney (played by Rappaport, who is more convincing). Still, the actress' work in the present-day scenes is less grating, and particularly good in a mother-daughter conversation late in the play.
Kull ably conveys her character's confusion and mounting hysteria, as she wonders if she's losing her mind even as she begins experiencing serious doubts about her impending nuptials. Rappaport radiates charm, and is particularly funny in a scene in which Virginia and Jeff engage in an ill-fated sexual encounter.
Bergman pushes a little too hard in his initial scenes, but nevertheless proves to be comically likable. Jenkins does what he can with a slimly written and somewhat caricatured role, while Mark Zeisler performs solidly as Lucas, one of Charlotte's former paramours who Virginia suspects is key to understanding the real story behind her parents' marriage.
Mitnick's farcical premise in Sex Lives of Our Parents goes hand in hand with a more serious question involving what it takes to build a life together. The play's ending is nicely modulated so that it does not arrive at a pat answer, but still comes to a satisfying conclusion wherein the work's central characters are poised to make some serious decisions, for better or for worse.
