Ten Deep 06.23.11: Top Ten Movie Teachers

School is just about out for the summer but before vacations begin in earnest, I thought it was a good time for Ten Deep to turn its discerning gaze towards movie teachers. The ten teachers that top this report card are all prime educators in their own unique ways. Most actually work in schools of a diverse sort and one sees a murky swamp planet as the proper classroom. The unifying thread in the list is the impact these individuals have on their students and the storylines of their films. I chose movie teachers specifically because including television more than doubled my initial brainstorming. Maybe that is a list for another day but for now I present you with the ten I have selected. He is able to help teenagers with explosive attitudes and abilities learn to find control or adapt to the things they cannot control. So you say your child's eyes project crimson force 24/7 or they can read the thoughts of everyone around them? Professor X is the man to seek out. In the X-Men films he inspires confidence in his students and gives them purpose. Much is said of Xavier's dream for co-existence between mutants and humans. He is a force for peace in a world of burgeoning chaos. I recently read a review of this film and the writer pointed out that as a teacher, Dewey Finn excelled because he loved his subject more than his students. I had to immediately agree. Finn exemplifies all of the qualities one needs to be an inspirational teacher. He possesses a true love for rock and roll that bursts forth from him in infectious waves. What he lakes in formal training he makes up for in raw talent. Is it any wonder that his students could not help but fall in love with the music too? Prof. Monnitoff is far from perfect. He is not that teacher that places his own existence in jeopardy for his students but he certainly comes close as we see his struggle with providing Donnie with the resources he needs to unravel the mystery of time travel and the writings of Roberta Sparrow. He made the list because it is quite clear that he is a champion of Donnie's cause in a world that seems stacked against the hero. First and foremost, Ms. Norbury makes this countdown because she is portrayed by Tina Fey. Realistically I could end this entry here as she is just that awesome, but I will continue. Ms. Norbury is the teacher who wants her students to succeed while being one of the few people who sees the absurdity of the world around her.

My Morning Jacket – True Love Ways :: Indie Shuffle

The most recent release has been My Morning Jacket’s cover of one of Holly’s last recorded tracks, “True Love Ways.” Lush, romantic, and (of course) a shade of epic, MMJ’s cover is rich with Jim James’s tremulous voice and a layer of strings. Carried by the delicate picking of guitar strings, its hard not to think of Holly’s premature death at 22 in a plane crash, while simultaneously getting swept away in the lovely simplicity of his lyrics. Beautiful and tragic — talk about the building blocks of rock ‘n’ roll.
