GSW has 3 make All-Academic for tennis

By Americus Times-Recorder, Ga.

June 21--AMERICUS -- Georgia Southwestern had three tennis players named to the 2011 Peach Belt Conference All-Academic Teams.

Sophomores Mollie McGowan and Ryan Bartz, along with senior Victor Pinones-Haltenhoff, received First Team honors.

McGowan finished with the spring with a 15-9 overall singles record and ranked second on the squad with a .625 winning percentage. The Americus native and former Southland Academy standout went 4-2 at No. 4 and 11-7 at No. 5. She kept a winning mark in doubles as well, going 12-9 overall. Her 4-7 record in Peach Belt play helped the Lady Hurricanes finish 2011 with a 13-11 overall record and a 2-10 mark in conference action.

GSW more than doubled its win total (6) from 2010 and the two wins in conference are the most since it joined the NCAA. A two-sport athlete, McGowan was named to the 2010 PBC All-Academic Women's Cross Country First Team.

In the classroom, the chemistry/pre-pharmacy major held a 3.93 grade point average.

Bartz finished 2011 with a winning record (6-5) at the No. 3 singles position. The Warner Robins native saw time at No. 2 and No. 4 and ended the spring with an overall mark of 7-14. He ended the season on a three-match winning streak that included a pair of PBC victories. In doubles play, Bartz went 6-15, with all but one of the matches coming at No. 2.

In the classroom, the engineering major held a 3.54 grade point average.

Pinones-Haltenhoff finished 2011 with a 4-10 record at the No. 1 singles position. After suffering a season-opening loss at Mercer, the Barcelona, Spain native won four of his next six matches. In the PBC, Pinones-Haltenhoff faced four nationally-ranked players down the stretch.

On the doubles side, he went 7-14 overall at the No. 1 position and finished 5-8 when teaming with freshman Chris Eastwood.

In the classroom, the marketing major held a 3.53 grade point average.

The All-Academic Team is part of a season-long program recognizing the outstanding accomplishments of PBC student-athletes in the classroom as well as on the field. To be eligible for the team, a student-athlete must participate in at least half of her team's events and be either a starter or significant contributor; have achieved a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale); and have completed at least one full academic year at her current institution.
