Preview: FX's "Wilfred" and "Louie"
The ever-brave FX Network debuts a seriously weird comedy tonight, pairing it with the second season of "Louie," one of TV's best, most ambitious shows.
"Wilfred," starring Elijah Wood, premieres at 9 p.m. today on cable channel 43, and believe me, this is one of the oddest shows you're ever going to see.
It opens with Wood's character, a former lawyer named Ryan, printing off the third draft of his suicide note and fixing himself a banana smoothie laced with a bottle of sleeping pills. Yes, it's a comedy and yes, Ryan lives.
The next day, Ryan meets his cute next-door neighbor's dog Wilfred. But to Ryan, Wilfred looks like a big man in a cheap dog suit. It's like Jimmy Stewart seeing Harvey, but instead of a 6-foot-tall white rabbit that's invisible to everyone else, Wilfred is a 6-foot-tall Australian who smokes a lot of weed.
Wilfred is, essentially, an unfettered id, exhorting Ryan to finally live a little. They go for romps on the beach despite a "no dogs allowed" sign. They philosophize: "Everything has to do with everything," Wilfred says repeatedly. And they smoke a Cheech and Chong movie's worth of pot.
Wood is a kick, but the real star is Jason Gann as Wilfred. Gann wrote and starred in an Australian series that inspired this remake, and he's a crude, boisterous presence.
"Louie," which follows "Wilfred" at 9:30 p.m., is just as crude and boisterous, but in a darker, blackly humorous way.
Based on the cynical stand-up comedy of Louis C.K., "Louie" is one of the smartest, surprising shows on TV.
FX gave C.K. a tiny budget and carte blanche, allowing him to create a show that's completely his own. It's not a situation comedy like anything you're used to seeing. There's barely any continuity between episodes. One episode might be used to tell one story, or it might be broken into two different stories, depending on C.K.'s whims and the demands of the story.
Tonight's episode stretches for the full half-hour and deals with a visit by Louie's very pregnant sister. It's a fine example of what the show does at its best: presenting finely tuned sketches that are mostly comedic, generally exaggerated, always hysterical and absolutely not predictable.
Anything can happen here, making the show feel like a high-wire act. "Louie" takes more narrative chances than any show I know. It never goes anywhere I expect, but it always makes perfect sense in getting there.
