Harley Hotchkiss, 1927 to 2011 | Swervecalgary.com – Calgary event ...
Published an excerpt from Harley Hotchkiss’s memoir as our March 6 cover story. One of editor Shelley Youngblut’s mentors, Paul Grescoe, worked with Mr. Hotchkiss on the book, and he graciously gave us permission to share the firsthand story of how the Flames came to Calgary on SwerveCalgary.com:
“In the more than two years I was collaborating with Harley in creating his book, Hat Trick: A Life in the Hockey Rink, Oil Patch and Community , I came to love a man who has been called the most influential of Calgary’s quiet Establishment. In both his involvements in oil and gas and his charitable contributions—among them, kick-starting the University of Calgary’s Hotchkiss Brain Institute with more than $15 million—he stayed behind the scenes. A couple of years ago, Harley was elevated to be a Companion of the Order of Canada, when he was called ‘a man of integrity, fairness and generosity.’ This showed not only in his philanthropy but also in his chairing of the NHL, when he helped end the year-long lockout in 2005 with his honesty and principled dealings with the players.” —Paul Grescoe
How a Man Called Hotch Helped Bring Atlanta’s Flames to Calgary
All through my corporate and entrepreneurial career, and my more important life as a husband to Becky and father to our five children, my love for hockey never flagged. I played pickup games as a young geologist in Calgary. I coached kids’ hockey for many years when we lived in Glendale and Lakeview Village, shovelling snow, flooding the rink, tying skates, wiping noses, and driving to games in other communities. And I was a regular at matches of whatever professional or semi-pro teams were current in the city. When I arrived in town in 1951, the Calgary Stampeders of the new Western Hockey League were playing in a $1.2-million Stampede Corral the community had recently built especially for them. At the time, there were only the six original teams in the National Hockey League, none of them in the West. That young Harley Hotchkiss couldn’t have foreseen in his most far-fetched pipe dreams that one day he’d be co-owner of an NHL club, that it would begin competing in what was now the old Corral–and then find a home in a new saddle-shaped arena.
Few other Calgarians in the ’50s–or even 20 years later–would ever have imagined the city had much of a chance to land an NHL franchise. The Stampeders had long since folded, so we locals were excited when the World Hockey Association was cobbled together in 1971. Competing for players against the senior major league, it authorized a team called the Calgary Broncos. But the Broncos never survived to start the first season–though a team in Edmonton called the Oilers did. It took another four years for the WHA to move the Vancouver Blazers to Calgary as the Cowboys. They played only one more year before low turnouts in a lackluster season bucked them into oblivion. The league itself died two years later.
