Natural selection: Pictured Rocks park official choose oil painting when the ...
MUNISING -- An old fishing tug moored near a lighthouse might spin Gregg Bruff into a yarn about the way fishermen depended on such lights for livelihood, or of life in isolated places. At some point, he’ll likely pull out his oil paints and tell the same story on canvas.
A disintegrating barn might lead to tale (and painting) about life once lived there. The same goes with a birch bark canoe or Lake Superior storm or rocky cliffs topped with an ancient forest.
"In a way, the essence of my work is interpreting a sense of place," said Bruff, chief of heritage education at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. "Art and the other things I do also describe the relationship between people and the way they live. ... Here, we have lighthouses and the Coast Guard and logging and blast furnaces. My goodness. I liken the place to a quilt on a grandmother’s bed. It’s just a patchwork of stories."
You can catch Bruff’s visual work in Munising-area galleries and also as part of the juried exhibit North of 45 on display at Northern Michigan University’s DeVos Art Museum through July 24. The depiction of two tugboats "Waiting out Winter" is one of his favorites for the way you can "dream all sorts of great stories out of that one scene."
But while Bruff is careful to stress that oil painting is his avocation -- not an official park role -- his life has long involved an interplay among art, nature and preservation.
"My folks took me to national parks on summer vacations," he said. "We camped out in a little pop-up camper that was not much bigger than my desk but had some wonderful, wonderful times."
While his father captured the iconic beauty of the parks with an old 35-mm camera on slide film, a young Bruff would use pen and ink. He would sketch rabbits, hawks or owls in the style of other artists of the time, one being original Sand County Almanac illustrator Charles Schwartz, and present them to family members as gifts.
He pursued a degree in wildlife biology, but one of his favorite parts of his first job at Ozark National Scenic Riverways was still graphics work on brochures and exhibits. As he moved up through the ranks, he also moved from sketches to watercolors, using that medium to paint birds. In 2005 he bought his first set of oils, and has since completed 40 or 50 paintings.

What is a Pop Up Camper ?
A pop up camper is basically a tent trailer having different components such as a hard roof, walls (usually made of canvas), trailer framer and a box. A pop up camper is unfurled or opened by first raising the roof. This is done with the help of a winch. Bunks present in the trailer are then pulled out. An attached tent is then opened and pulled over the bunks. Installing support poles for the bunks and entry points for getting inside the pop up camper is the last step.

Most of the repairs related to a pop up camper can be done at home. Everything from sewing the canvas, replacing tires to repairing tears and rips present on the screen/tent can be done without professional help. Repairing the cable of a pop up camper is easy. It should understood properly so as to make the necessary changes. Crank, pulleys and cables form the important components of the ‘pop up’ part of any camper. Let us understand which steps need to be taken if the cable snaps suddenly.
Repairing Cable Damage The pop up camper should be lifted by means of a scissor jack. Vice grips and C-clamps are used to clamp the guide rods. The next step in the process is to measure distance from the lower part of roof to ground. Four 2x4s should be cut to the length of the measured distance. These 2x4s should be placed under the roof in the 4 corners. Anti-seize and aerosol lubricants need to be applied to the cranks and cables respectively. The damaged pulley should be located during this operation and if the pulley has just slipped, it should be repositioned back. A wrench is used for removing damaged pulleys. After installing a new pulley, bolts need to be tightened. The pulley that is newly installed should be connected to the distribution box. Original fittings of the main assembly tube should be reinstalled, followed by aligning the new cable in the track. The last step in the process is to connect the winch to opposite end of cable.
