VIRGINIA BEACH
Crunch up the gravel drive past sunlight flashing through a stand of bamboo. Arrive back in the future.
Long, wide eaves punctuated by glass panels direct the eye to the main house and its peaceful, pleasing horizontal lines.
Set into a dune above Crystal Lake at the North End of Virginia Beach, the home is roofed with copper, dull and green with age.
Walk through the front door and feel drawn into a light-saturated arc, a 70-foot great room with a sweeping view of forest, water and sky.
The Cooke House, designed by the visionary and eccentric architect Frank Lloyd Wright, is for sale. It's only the second time since it was finished 51 years ago that the house will change hands.
Its renegade creator transformed the architectural vernacular in America before the turn of the 20th century with work that predicted the clean lines in both public and private structures today. Wright rejected what he derisively called copycat buildings that mimicked age-old European architecture.
Our country should have its own style, he thought: organic shapes in harmony with nature, buildings drenched with natural light and a feeling of both cozy shelter and soaring space. Construction materials should fit the natural setting, abstract forms mirror natural shapes - flowers, trees, hills, rivers, lakes.
Instead of being all about buildings, to Wright it was all about land.
"The land is the beginning of architecture," Wright often said, writes Patrick J. Meehan in "Frank Lloyd Wright Remembered."
The way Wright arrived at his revolutionary ideas began in childhood. After his birth in 1867, his mother decided that her child should become an architect.
When Wright was a young boy, his mother, Anna Lloyd Jones Wright, bought her son a set of Froebel toys. The geometric shapes of blocks, pegs and colored papers developed by German educator Friedrich Froebel, together with summers on his uncles' farms, shaped young Wright's world view, writes architecture critic Ada Louise Huxtable in the biography "Frank Lloyd Wright: A Life.
