Interview: Cyndi Lauper just wants to have fun singing the Memphis Blues - VIDEO

EIGHTIES pop princess Cyndi Lauper is still a girl who just wants to have fun – even if these days that means singing the Memphis Blues, writes Graham Walker.

The chameleon post punk star with multi-coloured hair, outrageous frocks and a colourful personality to match, was the Lady Gaga of her generation.

Signature hits Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, Time After Time and True Colours continue to attract new fans almost 30-years-on, as a staple of radio stations playing the enduring pop hits of a voice behind 11 albums, 40 singles and over 30 million record sales.

Now the effervescent Miss Lauper – at the age of 59 – has finally come of age with her latest album, called Memphis Blues.

It features blues classics by the likes of Muddy Waters, Albert King and Robert Johnson, with a Memphis backing band to die for – including BB King, Ann Peebles and harmonica master Charlie Musselwhite, said to have inspired The Blues Brothers.

This might sound like too much of an unexpected departure for the girl best know for hen party classics, who got her big break after a rock and wrestling collaboration with WWE.

But the buying public know best and kept it at number one on the USA Billboard Blues Album Chart for 14 consecutive weeks. Memphis Blues was also Grammy nominated.

That’s something she is immensely proud of, she says, as she prepares for her Memphis Blues Tour date at Sheffield City Hall on Friday, June 24, 2011.

“I thought the music was very inviting, the musicians playing on it were so great and I’m glad I was instrumental in shining a spotlight on the blues,’’ said Cyndi, explaining the appeal of her latest work.

“Part of it I guess is because I don’t come from that world. But I thought we did a legitimate blues album.

“I like to do the arrangements on my feet. I don’t like stuff written out, except for the chords. I’m a ‘feel’ singer. I like to feel what I’m doing and figure it out from there.

“So it was an interesting process working with these extraordinary musicians who I listened to growing up.

Netty Mac MUZIK NEWZ Ago2daY: CYNDI LAUPER - Time After Time

Today in 1984 "Time After Time" by Cyndi Lauper hit No.1 on the US charts and stayed there for 2 weeks.  Cyndi Lauper and Ron Hyman stayed late after studio sessions to compose the song. It is about Cyndi's life in the studio and life after the studio.  Ron also sang backup vocals.  I didn't know that the song was about being in the studio and it just happens that I am currently in the studio recording my album; interesting how I can listen to a song since 1984 and today it is brand new: 'Time After Time" was nominated for a Grammy in 1984 and was a huge success internationally. I have always quite enjoyed her video for this song. For starters who doesn't conjure up thoughts when we see a Bowler?? lol The vid is about a runaway that is running away from her boyfriend. I especially enjoy the very beginning when she is watching the 1930's movie and holding her ceramic dog that she makes kiss her sleeping boyfriend. Twisted: especially for the 80's!
