Shake your booty tonight

SPRING HILL — The 1970s are characterized by the music and the fashions of the era.

Disco ruled the airwaves, with the likes of Donna Summer, the Bee Gees, the Pointer Sisters and Irene Cara.

Fashions were flamboyant and included bell-bottom jeans, zippered jumpsuits, hot pants and platform shoes.

The era of living large will come alive this evening at '70s Disco Night at the Lake House.

The evening will feature music provided by DJ Marty "the One Man Party." There will be raffles, door prizes and contests for best 1970s costumes and best dancers. Snacks will be provided, and beer, wine and soft drinks will be available.

"This is our third (annual) disco dance," said Spring Hill Community Association president Eddie Lawrence. "We've had good success with it in the past. … It's something fun for the summer months when it's too hot for outdoor events."

Lawrence said the show usually is a sellout; the facility comfortably accommodates about 100 guests.

Tonight's event kicks off the community association's 2011 concert series. Additional indoor concerts will include a Summer Sock Hop with Lil Deuce Coupe on July 29 and a "Best of Sinatra" Italian Night with Bill Stabile on Aug. 19. A discount is available for those who purchase tickets to all three indoor shows.

Two other shows are set in the pavilion: Country Time "Picnic in the Park" with Brian Chytka and Jenny Remmer on Sept. 23 and "Another Motown Moment" with Act III on Oct. 15.

Money raised from the concert series, as well as the annual Angels on High holiday display in December, will go toward the association's scholarship fund.

If the season proves successful, Lawrence said, the association hopes to award several scholarships to local students at the end of the 2011-12 school year.

Because of two break-ins in 2010, the organization was unable to award any scholarships this past school year. Hit with a loss of about $10,000 in tools and equipment, the group worked toward replacing the stolen items and installing an alarm system.

"We got a lot of support from the community," Lawrence said. "The public really came through with donations of equipment and cash donations, and we've been able to replace everything we lost. Now we're back on the road to our goal of focusing on scholarships.
