Like many before me and many after, I will always remember my Marine Drill Instructor (DI) pushing me farther by saying “one more for the Corps.” It could be one more push-up, one more step, or one more of anything. The point: just when I was stopped, seemingly as far as I could go, he got more from me than I thought I had.
Years later, when working on a book with General Gray, the 29 Commandant of the Marine Corps, I had many opportunities to experience the Marine Corps in new ways. At the end of one long day, after observing young Marines at Officers Candidates School (OCS) and remembering my time in boot camp along with feeling a little overwhelmed by the day, I asked Lt. Colonel Jeff Bearor , OCS Executive Officer, “where the Marines stored all the one more times.”
Without a moment of hesitation, he pointed to his heart and said, “Right here.” Like my DI, I will always remember Colonel Bearor and his answer. It put everything (including me) in proper perspective. He was right. That’s where we store our values and experiences – in our hearts.
That’s why to this day, I am capable of pushing myself “one more time,” but even more important, I learned a key part of leadership is getting more from others than they believe they have.
