Career & Technical students receive senior BOCES awards
The Genesee Valley Educational Partnership celebrated the achievements of Career & Technical students attending the Batavia Campus at the senior awards program on June 9 at Le Roy High School.
Student of the Year honors were presented to Marshal Oberer for the morning session and Philip Casper for the afternoon session. Marshal is a Health Dimensions student from Caledonia-Mumford. Phil is a Graphic Arts student from Elba.
Paul Levins Memorial Awards are presented to two Building Trades students. Travis Bleier from Caledonia-Mumford received a scholarship in the amount of $1,000. Robert Morrow from Batavia was presented with a $200 cash award.
Patrick Kay, Building Trades student from Caledonia-Mumford, is the recipient of the Roy H. Turnbull Memorial Scholarship Award of $1,000.
Jacob Hopcia, Conservation student from Attica, was presented with the B. J. Mancuso Memorial Award in the amount of $1,000.
Porshe Gomez, Building Trades student from Batavia, received the Batavia Rotary Club Scholarship. This is a $1,500 scholarship granted each year for four possible years, providing the recipient maintains a 2.5 cumulative grade point average.
The Dr. Charles Holowach Memorial Scholarship is a one-time cash award of $2,000, $1,500 and $1,000. Jon Tesch, Culinary Arts student from Pembroke, received the $1,000 award. Molly Geissler, Health Careers Academy student from Elba, was presented with the $1,500 award. Jenna Hume, Information Technology Academy student from Batavia, received the $2,000 award.

ALA Annual Program – The Future is Now! E-books and Their ...
The American Library Association’s (ALA) Office for Information Technology Policy (OITP) will hold a program addressing the increasing significance of e-books and their impact on libraries during the ALA’s Annual Conference in New Orleans. The program, titled “The Future is Now! E-books and Their Increasing Impact on Library Services,” will be held on Saturday, June 25, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. in the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, Room 392.
Speakers will provide an overview of the current e-book landscape, address e-book devices, including technical support, highlight a successful library e-book program, and explore the relationships between publishers and libraries.
Presenters include Tom Peters, CEO of TAP Information Services; Chris Harris, coordinator of School Library Systems, Genesee Valley BOCES; Jamie LaRue, director, Douglas County (CO) Libraries; and Peter Brantley, director of the Bookserver Project for the Internet Archive.
