AUTHORITIES PREPARE FOR "OPERATION DRY WATER"

ATLANTIC COUNTY -- Security for the upcoming Dave Mathews Band Caravan remains a top priority, but landlocked concert goers won't be getting all the attention.

The U.S. Coast Guard is going to be out in full force in an effort to stop illegal, and unsafe boating.

"It's called Operation Dry Water, it's from the 24th to the 26th. It's heightened security for Coast Guard, the State Police, and police throughout the country to make sure that all boaters are acting in accordance to the laws and regulations that are involved with boating under the influence," said U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Second Class Ryan Labriola.

An impaired driver in Ocean County drove a 40-foot powerboat aground this week; another reminder of the importance of safe boating.

"They do it one week prior just to show that we are out there and we're not just going to be out there working on Fourth of July weekend and party weekends, we're going to be out there on regular weekends also. And, it just happens to be during the Dave Mathews Band at Bader Field." Labriola said.

"Around Bader Field, it's going to be like a zoo back there. I'm sure there's going to be a lot of jet skis, everybody's going to try to get a free view of the concert. I don't blame them," said Captain Mike Tabasso.

Tabasso hosts fishing trips on his charter boat the "High Roller," and sees the dangers of impaired boating on a weekly basis.

"It's a recipe for disaster when people drink and operate boats you know. Half of them really can't operate a boat anyway, and you add alcohol to that and it's dangerous out there. I see them out every weekend, the weekend warriors." Tabasso said.

The authorities will also be vigilant this weekend, and are warning visitors and regular boaters alike to adhere to any and all rules and regulations. Just in case, they will have breathalyzers, and field sobriety tests ready for those who don't follow the policies.
