Women & Infants Launches Rhode Island Center for Pelvic Floor Disorders

Providence, RI, June 23, 2011 --( PR.com )-- With the increasing aging population, it is projected by the U.S. Census Bureau that by the year 2030, the population over age 65 will double to more than 70 million in the U.S. alone, and more than one billion worldwide. In addition, it is estimated that approximately one-third of women will experience at least one disorder of the pelvic floor in her lifetime. With this in mind, Women & Infants Hospital has teamed up with practitioners across the state to create the Rhode Island Center for Pelvic Floor Disorders at Women & Infants Hospital. The Center was created to provide state-of-the-art diagnosis and therapy for women with pelvic floor disorders through comprehensive clinical care and organizational oversight. “Improved patient outcomes are an expected result from a dedicated center,” said Deborah L. Myers, MD, director of the Rhode Island Center for Pelvic Floor Disorders at Women & Infants Hospital, director of Women & Infants’ Division of Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery and the Program in Women’s Physical Therapy, and professor of obstetrics and gynecology at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. “Currently there are measures estimating outcomes and patient satisfaction in other medical areas which endorse the concept of forming centers of excellence and consolidation of specialties of practice.” Pelvic floor disorders are an issue of growing importance, from both an individual and public health point of view. Pelvic floor disorders (PFDs) include urinary incontinence (UI), fecal/anal incontinence (AI), and pelvic organ prolapse (POP). Other related symptoms and conditions which frequently accompany PFDs are sensory and emptying abnormalities of the lower urinary tract and bowel, pelvic and abdominal pain, musculoskeletal dysfunction of the pelvic muscles/ligaments, and constipation and diarrheal states.

PROVIDENCE - The population of homeless people in Rhode Island fell 20.2 percent in 2010 from 2009, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban reported Tuesday.

But the homeless population declined by only 6.5 percent when comparing 2010 to 2007, the annual evaluation report to Congress revealed homeless.

In 2010, Rhode Island in 1282 were homeless, or 0.15 percent of the population. The State 1321 "permanent supportive housing beds," which provide subsidized housing to help formerly homeless people to live independently.

On January 1 1, 2010, 76 Rhode Islanders were unsheltered, the report said, meaning they spent the night in a place “not meant for human habitation, such as the streets, abandoned buildings, vehicles, parks, and train stations.”

The report credits the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act with preventing national homelessness from worsening during the economic crisis by establishing the Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Re-housing Program, which assisted 690,000 people in its first year.

A separate HUD report, "Worst Case Housing Needs 2009," found that the number of renters who either spend more than half of their income on rent or live in severely inadequate housing increased more than 20 percent nationally between 2007 and 2009.

Rhode Island’s affordable housing program, Neighborhood Opportunities, will lose all funding in Gov. Lincoln D. Chafee’s proposed fiscal 2012 budget.
