In the garage of a Portland fire station, a chiropractic sports physician led a dozen firefighters through stretching exercises on Wednesday. They flexed their necks from side to side, rolled their shoulders forward and back, and moved their hips in circular motions.

Chiropractor Todd Turnbull told the firefighters the stretching routine will help loosen stiff joints and detangle muscle knots to allow greater flexibility.

Starting July 1, the Portland Fire Bureau is requiring the 10 –to 15-minute exercise regimen at the start of all shifts in an effort to cut down on firefighters' injuries.

The city's public safety disability fund recently voted to pay $23,000 to support the bureau's first Injury Prevention Active Warmup program – something Portland police are looking at with interest.

"We can replace our apparatus if something happens to it, but it's sure hard to replace a back, an arm or a life," said Janet Woodside, an occupational nurse who serves as manager of the bureau's Emergency Medical Service program.

Between July 2008 and December 2010, firefighters' back, shoulder, knee and ankle injuries -- the most prevalent injuries among local firefighters -- cost the taxpayer –financed Portland Fire and Police Disability and Retirement Fund more than $1 million. In 2010, 616 injuries were caused by firefighters lifting people who weighed 300 pounds or more, according to bureau data.

"We spend 97 percent on apparatus, and three percent or less on firefighters. We really need to do a better job on funding to prevent these injuries," Woodside said. "I've been saying for years to the pension fund, 'Why are you just paying once the members get injured? "

The fire bureau already has about 25 certified peer fitness trainers scattered through its stations. They will encourage their fellow firefighters to do the morning stretching.

"Trainers will really be like ambassadors," said Firefighter Irene Concepcion, a peer-fitness trainer and 12-year firefighter. Concepcion, who did the stretching regimen on Wednesday, said she's excited that the public safety fund is providing money to support such a program, as she snacked on celery sticks and peanut butter during a lunch break.

Concepcion and the other peer fitness trainers expect the initial response among firefighting crews to be tepid.

I’ve been planning to buy Ten Minute Trainer workout DVD but haven’t given it time yet. I’ve been really worked up at the office that I totally forgot about this plan until just last week.

Then just last week my daughter told me about a workout that is short but as effective as your gym classes. Then it hit me that she may be actually referring to the Ten Minute Trainer; which she actually was.

We bought the Ten Minute Trainer last week and got started it just yesterday. I did the workout before reporting to the office while my daughter did it before going to school. It hardly feels like you actually did a workout. But it’s because we just started.
