HEMET: West Valley students' film to make debut

West Valley High School's film and technology program will present its 12th annual summer movie project June 29 and 30.

This year's movie was written by former West Valley student Kemuel DeMoville and is a spoof of the old Bob Hope and Bing Crosby "road movies." Titled "The Road to Idyllwild," it follows two young ladies in their attempt to get to their prom, which is being held in the San Jacinto Mountains town.

Playing the young ladies are Chloe Cadarette and Evette Phillips. The dates, who abandon them, are played by Christian Griffith and Ben Leduc.

As the girls struggle up the mountain, they meet a crypto-zoologist played by Anthony Stockbarger who is searching for Big Foot (played by Angel Lepe); a captain of the DVD pirates (Kevin Kotter); the chief of the Tahquitos (Emily Brown); and dancing zombies.

More than 40 students have been working on the film as both actors and technical staff.

Justin Jones, of Watermore Imagery, is the director of cinematography, and teacher Stacey Bailey is the director. Students Michael Barrameda, Zach Arena and Ashton Gray are creating a documentary about the making of the film that will be part of the DVD available to students. Rebecca Stalder is the production assistant and Emerald Meyer and Vanessa Lima are in charge of script supervision.

The crew shot at West Valley and various locations in Hemet including the Ramona Bowl, but spent an entire day up in Idyllwild shooting many of the forest scenes and one entire sequence in downtown Idyllwild.

The film will be shown at 6 p.m. June 29 and 30 in the theater of West Valley High School. Tickets for the performances cost $5 and are available from cast members or at the door.

New West Valley superintendent 'excited' to start job | Yakima ...

YAKIMA, Wash. -- Mike Brophy figures he has nine or 10 more years until retirement. And West Valley just might be the last stop in his career as an educator.

The longtime administrator has been selected as the new superintendent of the West Valley School District. He’s expected to start July 1.

"I’m just excited," he said Wednesday, the day the board of directors of the West Valley School District unanimously decided to offer him the job. "I’m thrilled to have that opportunity. Not only is it a quality district — and from what I’ve heard — quality staff with caring individuals, it’s in a place I want to be."

While Brophy said he’s enjoyed the last five years as assistant superintendent for the Bethel School District in Spanaway, he’s looking forward to returning to Eastern Washington.

"West Valley has an outstanding reputation," he said. "It might be my last move. My goal was to get into a quality district in a superintendent position. And I really like the quality of life in Eastern Washington."

The board is still negotiating a contract with Brophy, 56.

Meantime, "We are thrilled to welcome him to our district," said board president Sasha Kinloch, who called the candidate after Wednesday’s 6:30 a.m. special meeting to offer him the job.

"We really appreciate his strengths in instructional leadership," she said. "We appreciate the strong accountability he provides in evaluating staff. And he has excellent interpersonal communication skills."

Other attributes are his "comprehensive experience in other districts" and "excellent oversight in fiscal responsibility," Kinloch said.

Brophy, of Puyallup, has been at Bethel since 2006, supervising secondary schools and principals. For five years before that, he was assistant superintendent in Wenatchee’s Eastmont School District, overseeing personnel and operations.

And from 1994 to 2001, he was principal at Eastmont High School in Wenatchee.

He’s also served as principal or assistant principal of Aberdeen, Centralia and Camas high schools. And early in his career, he worked as a social studies and physical education teacher in the Mount Vernon, Mossyrock and LaCrosse school districts.

Since then, he’s been a presenter at numerous educational conferences and workshops. He’s also taught at Heritage University, City University and Walden University.
